The Handsome Monkey King
As time goes by, the stone monkey can walk, run and jump in the mountains. Everyday, he eats grasses and leaves, drinks from streams, picks mountain flowers, and forages for tree fruits; he also makes friends with all the other monkeys, tigers and leopards; by day, he would play with them or explore caves and mountaintops; at night, he sleeps overnight under a cliff.
One morning, it was very hot. So the stone monkey and all the other monkeys were playing in the shadow of the pines to avoid the heat.
After a few minutes, the monkeys ran to the stream. They jumped into the stream and everyone splashed and played there. The water rolled and bounced over the rocks like rolling melons. There is an old saying that: “Birds have bird language and animals have animal talk.” All the monkeys cried and shouted to each other, “I wonder where that stream comes from. Does anyone know where the stream begins? We have nothing else to do today, why wouldn’t we go upstream and find its source? That must be fun” . With a shout, they all ran away, leading their children and calling on their brothers. They ran alongside the stream, jumped over rocks and climbed up steep cliffs. Higher and higher they went up the mountain until they reached its source, where a waterfall cascaded from a spring.
The monkeys clapped their hands and shouted with delight, “What lovely water. What lovely water. It must go all the way to the bottom of the mountain and join the waves of the sea. ” “Whoever is brave and clever enough to jump through the fall, find the source, and come out alive, let’s make him our king.” a monkey made a suggestion. But no one answered. So the monkey shouted this challenge for three times. Suddenly, the stone monkey leapt out from the crowd and called out at the top of his voice, “I’ll do it. I’ll do it.”
You see that at that moment, he closed his eyes, crouched, sprang, and leapt into the waterfall. When he splashed through the waterfall and landed in a large cave, his eyes opened wide. He raised his head to look around, but he saw neither water nor waves. A bridge stood in front of him, as large as life. He stopped, calmed himself, took a closer look, and found that the bridge was made of iron. Under the bridge, the water rushed and poured out through a fissure in the rocks, screening the gateway to the bridge. He started walking towards the bridge, and as he looked, he found what seemed to be a house. It was really a good place. What a nice place!
He took a long look and then scampered to the middle of the bridge, from where he noticed a stone tablet. On the tablet had been carved in big letters: THE BLESSED LAND OF THE MOUNTAIN OF FLOWERSAND FRUITS, CAVE PARADISE WITH THE WATER CURTAIN.
The stone monkey was beside himself with glee. He rushed away quickly, shut his eyes, crouched, and leapt back through the waterfall. "We are very lucky, we're in luck," he said with a chuckle. All the other monkeys crowded around him asking, "What's it like in there? How deep is the water?" "There's no water, none at all," answered the stone monkey. "There's an iron bridge, and on the other side of the bridge there's a perfect house that must have been made by Heaven and Earth." "How ever could you see a perfect house there?" the other monkeys asked. The stone monkey chuckled again. "The water here comes under the bridge and through the rocks, and it hides the gateway to the bridge from view. There are flowers and trees by the bridge, and a stone house too. Inside the house are stone rooms, a stone stove, stone bowls, stone plates, stone beds, and even stone benches. In the middle of it, you can find a tablet which says 'The Blessed Land of the Mountain of Flowers and Fruits, Cave Paradise with the Water Curtain'. It's just the perfect place for us to settle down in. And there's room there for thousands of monkeys. Let's all move in, then we won't have to put up with any nonsense from heaven.
All the other monkeys became excited and delighted to hear what the stone monkey said. So they said eagerly: "You go first and we will follow you." The stone monkey shut his eyes, crouched, and leapt in again, shouting, "Follow me in, follow me." The braver monkeys all jumped through straightly. But there are timid ones, who, before going in, peered forward, shrank back, rubbed their ears, scratched their cheeks, shouted, and yelled at the top of their voices, all clinging to each other. After rushing across the bridge, some of the monkeys and apes began fighting and arguing. They grabbed plates, snatched bowls from one another. Others fought over the stoves and bedrooms. They moved everything around. Monkeys are born naughty and they could not keep quiet for a moment until they had worn themselves out moving things around. The stone monkey sat in the top seat and said, "Ahem, Gentleman, People do not believe, I do not know it can be. Just now you all said that if anyone was brave and clever enough to come in here and get out alive again, you'd make him king. Well, then. I've come in and gone out, and gone out and come in. I've found you a cave paradise, where you can sleep in peace and all settle down to live in happiness. Why aren’t you bowing to me?" Hearing this, all the monkeys bowed and prostrated themselves, not daring to disobey. They lined up in groups in order of age and paid their homage to the king. They shouted “All hail the monkey king”, calling the stone monkey as the "Great King of a Thousand Years." The stone monkey then took the throne, and called himself the “Handsome Monkey King” .
译文是“the monkeys ran to the stream.
